Hi my name is Fiona Soutter from Super Savvy Business with this week’s Business News Word of the Week.
Today at the Ultimate Web Blueprint in Melbourne we’re going to be talking about how to find an outsourced team member.
There’s a couple of key things I teach and it’s very important that you find the right person in the first place. When I go on to outsource agency websites and I advertise for somebody, not only do I list the skills that I’m looking for, but also the personal values and attitudes that I’m looking for.
Because what I’ve learnt is, if you don’t have someone on your team that has the personal attributes and values that you value highly, then that person is likely not to work out for you.
So I’m very clear about those sorts of things. I’m looking for punctuality, I’m looking for reliability, I’m looking for integrity… I’m looking for someone that has attention to detail — somebody who can show initiative, for example.
Now the other thing I do in order to try and weed out the time wasters is actually ask for a qualifier in the advertisement. Because I want to test to see if the person has attention to detail and can follow instructions. I’m also looking for the ability to communicate effectively in written English.
So the qualifier I usually use is this: I say, “when you apply for this job, please tell me your favourite movie, and in 100 words or less tell me why you like it.”
It’s amazing how many people can’t follow this instruction, and the ones that do often just cut-and-paste some text from the internet. So these people are instantly out of the run or race for being employed by me as one of my team members.
So that’s just a couple of tips you can use when it comes to hiring somebody through an outsource agency.
However, if you don’t want to go through this process yourself and you want someone else to do the interviewing, someone to do the reference checking and some testing for skills, then you might want to go through an agency such as Virtual Staff Finder which is run by Chris Ducker.
His team are very very good at helping you find the right person to bring in to your business, and I’ve used this service in the past and have been very impressed.
So that pretty much wraps up our update for this week’s Business Word of the Week, my name is Fiona Soutter and I’m here in Brisbane — Melbourne, sorry, Brisbane was yesterday! — I’m here in Melbourne with some wonderful people at the Ultimate Web Blueprint and I look forward to seeing you in our next update.
