I joined the online marketing world in 2008, but I may as well say that was the year when I enrolled to a lifelong university.
So many things have changed (even the industry received a new nomination of “digital marketing” instead of “internet marketing”!) and I have had to readjust my marketing skills on a continuous basis since then.
As far as I am concerned, I live to embrace the change. I love it.
It may not be as pleasant for other business owners, though.
- Think about having to readjust your marketing strategy according to Google’s guidelines. Several times a year.
- Or learning about Google’s new algorithm changes (which basically revolutionised the industry of online marketing). Why on earth would they give these updates such sweet names like Panda and Penguin if they were a pain in the bottom for so many marketers?
- Or staying on top of Facebook’s new releases (video, embed posts, Facebook live, graph search & co.). These guys are riding the wave of updates!
- Or finding out that Snapchat is like the new honey pot for digital marketers and learning how to use it to your advantage.
You see, the job of a digital marketer does not lie solely on creating and implementing digital strategies. At the end of the working day, a lot of marketers come home to a pile of learning material which help them stay top of the game.
Think this isn’t challenging?
Every couple of months, a new update is released for one or another social media platform.
Marketers need to know how to use all these platforms if they want to stay in business or keep their jobs. And we’re talking dozens of platforms, besides the giants you are already familiar with (Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube, Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn).
Heck, even WordPress changes its layout regularly!
Add to this the fact that users’ behaviour switches from one trend to another every now and then.
Lots of homework.
As I said at the beginning of this article, I live, eat and breathe these things. More than eight years of digital marketing have taught me that there will always be a constant flux of new information in this industry; always something new to digest.
