Hi, Fiona Soutter here from Super Savvy Business with this week’s SEO and Traffic Word of the
Week update.
0:15 – Do you know what your audience wants? Give it to them!
At the recent events that I held in February throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, I asked our attendees what type of content they most like to consume. I asked them, “Would you rather watch a video which is a couple of minutes long or sit down and read an article?” and the overwhelming response came back that most people would prefer to watch a short video – especially amongst the younger crowd.
I think, as business owners, we really need to take this on, because at the end of the day, the crowd is not getting any younger, and in fact, the crowd are now moving into corporate, they are moving into business, they are starting their own businesses as well. So it’s important that we create content that is going to be engaging to them.
If video is not part of your content marketing strategy already, then I highly recommend that you start looking at getting involved. Creating videos is something that might take you a little while to get used to, but once that is part of your routine you will be churning those videos out without even thinking; and in fact it will be a lot faster than actually sitting down and writing written content.
1:24 – Relevance is the new PR
This week I came across an interview with one of Matt Cutt’s former search quality team members and in the interview he was quoted as saying that relevance is the new PR.
What exactly do I mean by that?
Well, PR stands for PageRank, and there was a day when getting a link from a high PR site was absolute gold. This, as SEO experts, we would try to do for ourselves, for our clients. However, things have really changes these days, and what is more important these days is getting a link from a site that is relevant to the topic of your site.
That actually holds a lot more weight these days than just having a link from a high PageRank site.
2:07 – Getting links from relevant, high PR websites
So, how do we go about getting links from some of these sites (sites that are relevant in topic to yours)?
Well, it comes down to the whole concept that I have spoken about in the past when it comes to link earning, rather than link building. Here are a few more tips; I’d like to expand on this idea just a little bit more:
-
First thing you can do is to create an authoritative guide for a particular topic, and in that guide mention a whole pile of resources that are relevant. Now, once you’ve done that, email the people who have made those resources and let them know that you have mentioned their product or service. By doing this, there is a chance that that particular website owner, or the owner of that product or service might actually link back to your page or tweet about it, or sharing on other social media platforms, therefore giving links back to your own site.
-
Another idea is to create content that people naturally want to share. One of the things that are shared quite widely around the internet are good quality and well researched infographics.
-
A third idea is to create an industry spotlight; this works in a very similar way to the authoritative guide, where you spotlight an expert in your industry, or a particular product or service and review it or talk about what that person is doing. Once again, what you then do is to email that person and let them know that you have mentioned them or their product or service, and, likewise, they are most likely to want to share it with their communities or even link to it from their own website.
-
Finally, the fourth tactic you might want to try is to interview experts within your niche. This could easily be done through recording on Skype or you can use other products such as GoToWebinar.com or GoToMeeting.com, or even a free service such as Google Hangouts. The wonderful thing is that if you choose carefully, and if you choose experts within your niche that have a strong following, then you are likely to be able to reach their audience as well and if they are really passionate followers of this particular expert, then likely they are going to be tweeting and sharing your interview as well. So it’s a great little tactic to get more traffic but also links back to your site.
So really what this all boils down to is all about building a network with site owners that have topics that are relevant to you and your business.
You see, 3 links from authentic pages that are highly relevant to your topic is going to be so much better than a thousand links from spammy blogs and other spammy sites. It’s food for thought, really.
4:53 – Are your SEOers earning you relevant authoritative links?
And just one final note before you go… if you are outsourcing your SEO or link building to an outside agency or third party company, please make sure that they are taking this approach of building from relevant and authoritative sites as opposed to sites that are not really relevant to you and they are just building on quantity rather than quality.
It’s very, very important to get this right, because the last thing you want to do is find yourself in a situation where you have thousands of spammy links pointing to your site that Google then wants you to remove.
